Secretary Gutierrez Convenes Leaders to Address Keeping America Competitive in the 21st Century


WASHINGTON—U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez will host the 2008 National Summit on American Competitiveness in Chicago, Illinois on Thursday, May 22.  Leaders from industry, government and academia will attend the summit for a series of discussions on what the public and private sectors can do to secure America’s position as the most competitive economy in the 21st century and beyond.

The summit features four separate panels: Roadmap for the Next Decade; Entrepreneurship; Utilizing Free Trade Agreements; and The 21st Century American Community. Moderators for these panels include: Henry M. Paulson, Jr., U.S. Treasury Secretary; Maria Bartiromo, CNBC anchor; Carl Schramm, president and CEO of Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation; and John Engler, president of National Association of Manufacturers.  A media availability will follow each panel.

Other confirmed speakers include: Boeing Company CEO James McNerney; YouTube Co-Founder Steve Chen; Intel Corp. Chairman Craig Barrett; Caterpillar Inc. CEO Jim Owens; Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour; South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford; Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano; and Chicago Mayor Richard Daley.
