As part of its continuing effort to recognize April as Financial Literacy Month, the National Association of Federal Credit Unions (NAFCU) will participate in Financial Literacy Day on Capitol Hill.

The event, which will highlight a variety of programs and activities that promote financial literacy throughout the United States, will be held at noon on Monday, April 28, in the Hart Senate Office Building, Room 902.

“Promoting thrift is at the heart of the credit union philosophy,” said NAFCU President Fred Becker. “As part of this effort, credit unions across the country have made significant contributions to the financial literacy of their members, with everything from student-run credit union branches to community programs that educate people of all ages on the basics of personal finance.”

Becker added, “We are delighted to have the opportunity to show Capitol Hill the good work that credit unions are doing to provide their members with the knowledge to make wise financial decisions.”

NAFCU Director of Legislative Affairs Brad Thaler, Associate Director of Legislative Affairs Amanda Slater and Lynette Smith, vice president and COO of Treasury Department Federal Credit Union, will showcase a sample of products and services that help facilitate the financial education of millions of credit union members.

Financial Literacy Day will be chaired by Sen. Daniel Akaka, D-Hawaii. Sen. Michael Enzi, R-Wyo, Rep. Ruben Hinojosa, D-Texas, and Rep. Judy Biggert, R-Ill., are also invited to participate.

Some of the recent efforts NAFCU has undertaken to promote financial literacy increase:

a partnership with Hispanic America Saves, run by the Consumer Federation of America (CFA), to promote saving and wealth-building among Hispanic Americans; and

participation in the Savings for Life Coalition, a group of organizations that provide the Aspen Institute with a pool of expertise on savings issues and their promotion at the federal level.

NAFCU is the only national organization that focuses exclusively on federal issues affecting credit unions, representing its members before the federal government and the public. For more information, visit www.nafcu.org.
