TRB’s second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP 2) has released a
summary document that provides an overview of the program and explores
its four thematic research areas–safety, renewal, reliability, and
capacity. The research being undertaken in SHRP 2 is revolutionary in
many ways, aimed at gaining insights that will have significant and
innovative impacts on traffic congestion, highway fatalities, and
quality-of-life issues.

TRB’s Transit Cooperative Research Program (TCRP) Synthesis 72: Use of
Biodiesel in a Transit Fleet explores potential benefits offered by
biodiesel in order to help transit agencies make informed decisions
regarding its use.

TRB’s Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation
Research Board, No. 2019 includes 30 papers that explore modeling crash
frequency by severity, time series analysis of road risk, crash data
analysis using bootstrapped maximum likelihood method, time series
analysis of the effect of holidays on daily traffic counts,
regression-to-mean effect in traffic safety evaluation, roundabouts, and
the safety impact of improved signal visibility. This issue of the TRR
also examines automated analysis of road safety with video data, route
safety assessment, crash prediction models, innovative time series
analysis of road marking retroreflectivity and crashes, prediction of
fatality rates, safety index of two-lane rural highways, safety planning
study of urban freeways, signalized intersection right-angle crashes,
and the impact of active speed limiters. In addition, this issue
reviews the identification of intersections for red light cameras,
animal-vehicle collisions, reliability of road safety estimates,
estimating safety benefits of shoulder rumble strips, identifying sites
with specific accident types, safety prediction models, the safety

TRB’s Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation
Research Board, No. 2025 includes 14 papers organized in four parts.
Part 1, roadside safety design, examines a guardrail for long-span
culverts; steel post, W-beam guardrail systems; low-tension three-strand
cable median barriers; and a guardrail W-beam-to-Thrie-beam transition.
Part 2, landscape and environmental design and context-sensitive design
and solutions, explores road design in small rural communities; a model
for freeway green landscape evaluation; context-sensitive solutions,
value engineering and asset management; integrating value engineering,
and context-sensitive solutions; use of context-sensitive methods to
influence operating speeds; and mainstreaming context-sensitive design
in Massachusetts. Part 3, hydrology, hydraulics, and water quality,
examines particle separation and hydrologic control by cementitious
permeable pavement, abutment scour prediction equations, and porous
asphalt overlay impact on storm water quality. Part 4, utilities,
contains one paper that reviews outsourcing utility coordination.

DEVELOPING SCHOOL-BASED CYCLE TRAINS IN NEW ZEALAND

Land Transport New Zealand has released a report that examines the
characteristics of cycle trains and explores the process for setting up
and operating them. A cycle train is similar in approach to the walking
school bus - adult volunteers, or conductors, cycle along a set route to
