Former New York Mayor Wants Reagan Model November 16, 2007

Former New York Mayor and possible republican presidential nominee Rudy Giuliani, spoke to a full audience during the second day of the Federalist Society’s Annual Conference. The crowd listened on with mixed thoughts; mostly due to his support of gay rights and abortion. Giuliani did everything he could to muster support from the semi-skeptical crowd. He began his remarks by making references to Ronald Reagan (always a crowd pleaser in conservative circles) and bashing Hillary Clinton [remarking on her flip-flopping over the issue of giving driver liscenses to illegal immigrants]. Both of these things gave him huge applause.
What got him the most applause was his statement to put conservatives on the Supreme Court if he’s elected president in 2008. He said he would model his nominations after Reagan’s lead. Having served in the Reagan Administration, he thinks he has a pretty good idea of what a nominee needs to exhibit. Giuliani served as a senior official in the administration’s Department of Justice. “We’re seeking to find judges who understand the very, very important concept that judges exist to interpret the law, not amend the law,” he told the group. “We believe in the rule of the law, not in the rule of judges.”
He also remarked that Supreme Court Justices Alito, Thomas and Scalia are exactly what the court needs more of. “Our constitutional principles instruct us that we have to recognize the limitations on power as a way protecting our liberty,” said the former New York mayor.
Giuliani said he had 200 reasons why the next president of the United States will be a critical one. “During a four year term in the White House, the sitting president will appoint about 200 federal court judges. People like Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, or John Edwards will not appoint judges who will interpret law, these judges will try to establish law”
