The ABA Winter Session on Antitrust Law November 13, 2007

The American Bar Association’s (ABA) Section of Antitrust Law will be having their Section of Antitrust Annual Fall Forum Conference on November 15 & 16.  The conference will be held at the National Press Club and the J.W. Marriott Hotel, here in Washington, D.C.  The conference will release the latest developments in antitrust, legislative initiatives, resale pricing, enforcement priorities in mergers and acquisitions, recent decisions of the Supreme Court and global competition will be among the programs offered at the forum. 

 

In attendance will be the former Solicitor General of the United States Theodore B. Olson, and Federal Trade Commission Chairman Deborah Platt Majoras.  Other key persons attending will be officials of the Federal Trade Commission and U.S. Department of Justice.  State Enforcement officials and also representatives of the European Commission, members of the congressional counsel, and the antitrust section chair, Kathryn M. Fenton.  

 The highlights of the meeting include:  Current enforcement priorities for merger cases; monopolizing and dominance; criminal antitrust law overseas; and exemptions and immunities (in reference to the courts).  The most interesting session to be covered will be the legislative session (in reference to what congress is doing). 

 One of the faculty members of this conference will be Gene Kimmelman.  Kimmelman is Vice-President of Federal and International Affairs for Consumers Union (CU).  Consumer Union publishes Consumers Reports.  Consumers Union an expert, independent, nonprofit organization whose mission is to work for a fair, just, and safe marketplace for all consumers. 

 Another falcuty member will be Leslie Overton of Jones Day.  She practices exclusively in the antitrust and government regulation areas. Her practice focuses on mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, civil nonmerger investigations, and counseling.

 Leslie has represented a variety of clients, including media, technology, telecommunications, and consumer products companies, as well as health care organizations. Representative public matters include Procter & Gamble’s acquisition of Gillette, TV Guide’s combination with Gemstar, AOL’s merger with Time Warner and its acquisition of Netscape, Bon Secours’ sale of three hospitals to HMA, and Nextel’s modification of a consent decree that paved the way for it to extend its network. She has also counseled Exelon, CIGNA, Viacom, and Chevron, among others.
